“Guy,”, claiming the adjustment for a long -time reader and a regional homeowner insurance company, told me in a video chat, “This is a time when the power gap between management and claim people becomes clear. We were told in meetings, ‘If you want to keep your job,’ If you want to keep your job, we can tell you the way we tell you and request the same.
He showed me photos of an insured house, their original repair estimate and “modified final estimates” from their original repair estimates. He said, “They are ripping the insured person, and as soon as these works are done, I am out of here.”
What to do if your insurance company is not playing with rules

I ran this important question by Los Angeles -based independent insurance broker Carl Suzman, who writes articles for Kiplinger.com and is a CBS news advisor.
Additionally, I spoke with a public adjustment John Petrov located in Diamond Bar, California, who explained the role of a public adjustment (PA).
Petrov said, “There is only one task for all claims.” “Those who work for insurance companies try to reduce the payment of claims, while public adjuster works to harm the person. A PA work is to handle your claim correctly and honestly and you have to help you get all the things that you are entitled to, not to cut the corners to keep the boss happy.”
In my law practice, I have learned many PAs, who worked for large insurance carriers, became disillusioned with the practices of shady claims, went out on my own and, as I heard for years, it was just good, “it was just good, because I was really helping someone for a change.”
The biggest risk you now face: being pressured to sign a contract
I asked Suzmann and Petrov: After living through a natural disaster – all the things that mean in your house, business, they disappear – now what is the biggest risk to you now?
Petrov replied, “Sign himself with a person to pressurize up who just appears out of the thin air, promises to handle the claim.”
He said: “In this way PA gets a bad reputation. Never hire a public adjustment that just shows and makes you a contract. You are unsafe.”
Suzmanman agrees: “A time can come when you need a PA, but never choose the person who is looking for you. Stay local, as you need for lawyers, and referrals from reliable sources are important.
“Remember, unlike the adjustment of your insurance company’s claims, which is paid by them, you are paying one percent of the money paying on your insurance company’s claim. Do your time and research on the person and their company before signing.”
What to keep in mind if you claim
Suzmann and Petrov provided these tips, which tries to scare the process of filing a home insurance claim less:
- Immediately file a claim with your insurance company. The policies have a time limit for filing claims.
- Although it is definitely appropriate to determine the consultation with a lawyer, there is no reason to run the lawyer’s fees at the beginning of the claims process. “However, if you are asked to make a statement under the oath, hire a lawyer for him,” Petrov insisted.
- Allow the claims process to move forward. If it appears that, even after talking to a claim supervisor, you have hit a brick wall, it is time to speak with PA.
Take your time while considering offer
With great disadvantages, customers feel a feeling of urgency. They need money as soon as possible to start bringing their lives back together.
Therefore, beware of quickly careful, loball offers and pressure to accept them, especially after a natural disaster.
This is the one that often makes a PA need to hire. And, yes, you will pay their fees (which vary by state), but net results can be much better.
