CVS Health has been a reliable name in Healthcare for decades, but the company’s plan to close an additional 270 stores or more in 2025 may limit pharmacy access to some customers.
Closures are part of a multi-year reorganization attempt and reflect extensive changes in retail healthcare industry. Many traditional pharmacy chains are reevaluating their footprints as consumers rapidly turn to digital solutions, telehales and home delivery services.
These developed preferences coupled with rising operational costs and competition from online retailers are forcing companies to adapt their strategies to remain profitable and relevant in the changing health care scenario.

Why CVS stores are closing?
In a 2021 statement, CVS Health announced that it would close about 300 stores a year in a year in the next three years, starting in the spring of 2022. “The company is evaluating the change in population, consumer buying patterns and future health to ensure that consumers have the right type of stores and for business,” reads the statements.
While CVS is closing health stores, it is also making “new store format” to run high engagement with consumers. These new stores will include sites that provide primary care services, offering increased healthy locations to everyday health and well -being requirements and traditional CVS offer products and services for pharmacy stores.
The CVS Health Annual Report filed in February said that the retailer plans to close 270 stores in 2025. According to the report, the closure is aimed at “entering the enterprise-wide reorganization plan, which is aimed at streamlining and simplifying the organization, improving efficiency and reducing costs.”

CVS has not published an official list of store closures for 2025. However, news outlets have identified several places which are allegedly scheduled to close this year.
While these reports provide a glimpse in potentially affected areas, CVS has not confirmed the individual store address. For the most updated information, customers are encouraged to directly check with their local store or use CVS store locator.
What does CVS store closure mean for the future of pharmacy access and retail
The CVS Store Closure is part of a large retail healthcare reorganization that can limit pharmacy access. Walgreens has announced a plan to shut down 1,200 stores in three years, which started in 2025 with 500 stores closures. On May 5, chapter 11 filed for bankruptcy Rite Aid and announced that it will shut down more than 400 stores.
Changing shopping habits can be behind these bandages. The launch of Amazon Pharmacy in 2020 formed additional competition, and facilitated the facility to order online prescriptions and to your door, it is difficult to defeat.
Online shopping and shifting consumer habits may be more limited to access to in-Person pharmacy services, to make changes in retail healthcare. While online pharmacies provide convenience, they are not always the best option, especially when you need a quick filled prescription or there are questions that need pharmacists.
Pharmacies such as CVS offer the option to talk with pharmacists and ask questions, and this personal relationship is lost when buying online. And, for those who lack internet access or are not comfortable to order online, local pharmacies are necessary.
With low brick-and-mortar pharmacies, you may have to drive further to reach your local pharmacy. The time of prescription supply can be extended, and you may need to be ready to wait in long lines.
Retailers such as CVS can offer new store formats to offset some closures, but retail healthcare landscape is clearly shifted. It is likely that more individuals will turn to online pharmacies due to lack of local options, and will only use local brick-and-mortar pharmacies for immediate prescription needs.
Bottom line
To accommodate changing consumer behavior and increasing competition to CVS and other major pharmacy chains, the future of pharmacy access may seem very different.
While online services provide convenience, the loss of local shops can cause new challenges, especially for those who rely on in-commercial care. It would be important to inform and discover all available options as healthcare retail landscape continues to develop.
