Cardinley Smith, MD, PhD, discovered her career back to her mother, whose dream of becoming a doctor was never felt.
Impressed by that initial inspiration, Dr. Smith is now a national recognized expert in the treatment of lung cancer and is the Chief Medical Officer, inaugurated at the Memorial Slone Catering Cancer in New York City. His career extends over 20 years and has been marked by a deep commitment to eliminate systemic obstacles in healthcare and expand high quality cancer and expand access to treatment.
He has led several research initiatives focused on health equity, including efforts to improve patient-provider communication and historically intimate care intervals for the underscribed population. Dr. Smith also serves as the chairman of the American Society of Clinical Oncology as Chairman of the Education Program Committee, where she guides the development of educational materials and sessions subjects of the conference.
Amidst his instantaneous priorities as the CMO of MSK, Dr. Smith will focus on expanding access to the latest innovations in cancer care by strengthening the strategic partnership of the Institute and furthering new models of care, saying in an interview. Baker,
“There is an incredible responsibility that we have in terms of ensuring that we acquire this knowledge others and partners with others so that we can bring other models of care distribution to individuals that are considered to be a cancerous desert in communities and settings,” he said.
Since 1990, MSK has been ranked as one of the top two cancer centers in the country continuously. It operates a strong research enterprise with hundreds of active clinical trials at any time and employs more than 21,000 people in its facilities in New York and New Jersey.
Through its cancer alliance program, MSK partner to expand its clinical expertise and access to novel treatments with cancer centers in many other states. In his new role, Dr. Smith will play an important role in deepening these relationships, which will make leading efforts to enhance interdisciplinary cooperation and team-based care.
Another main part of his role would be to exploit artificial intelligence-based equipment to reduce the administrative burden on physicians and identify more patients for clinical trials, with the target of diversifying participation and connecting more people with novel remedies.
Dr. Smith said, “I saw an opportunity to help lead an institution, which is already famous in the next era, where we are actually focusing on quality innovation, which is not only aspirations, but in fact we actually provide cancer care in every setting,” Dr. Smith said. “I say ‘setting’ in the true sense of the word – only does not focus on what is commonly thought of as academic ivory towers, but in fact, how do we get it in our community sites and community practices?”
Dr. Smith also joined MSK from Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, where he has spent the last three years as Vice President of Cancer Clinical Affairs and CMO of Tish Cancer Hospital.
She will continue to see patients and lead research projects in her new role.
