New Hyde Park, NY-based Northwell Health is turning to artificial intelligence to help fix one of its long-standing problems: high-cost incomplete tracking of high cost surgical supply.
According to May 28 news from the health system, the health system has rolled out the AI-managed computer vision platform at Northern Shor University Hospital and Manhaset, Dorothy at NY and Elvin Schwartz Ambulatory Surgery Center.
“Our goal in the health system is to monitor the use and movement of high-end clinical products in all procedural areas in the health system,” said Northwell’s Senior Vice President and Chief Purchase Officer, Fellis McCreddy.
Baker Talked to Wil Korigan, vice -president of the hospital operating at Will Northwell, and about the change in this AI platform, Deputy Chief Professor Officer Vikas Balani.
“We have been trying to solve this problem for 20 years,” said Mr. Korigan. “Our manual documentation process was not capturing everything. It was capturing what we needed to protect our patients and run business, but it was not capturing enough to give us the insight we need.”
The release stated that ASTIQ captures the use of supply during surgery, addressing the error contained in traditional barcode, RFID, EHR and paper-based tracking, stated in the release. The result is waste and better data for supply chain decisions and a customized billing process.
“At its core, the technique is based on computer vision,” said Mr. Balani. “When the product is very expensive and there is a termination date for it, it becomes important to be able to track where those supply is going. It is very difficult to maintain a good control of the supply chain and related costs without occupying the product where the physical journey of the product in a health system.”
The rollout currently focuses on the Manhasset Campus, with a plan to expand after integration with the new epic EHR system of Northwell, which the health system is currently infection.
“We are focusing on deploying on North noise and measuring return on investment,” said Mr. Korigan. “Once this happens, we are focusing on epic integration to take advantage of that assitiq functionality, as we cannot scale this technique within the Northwell without EHR integration. It makes sense to move forward with a non-well-known solution in the North Noise due to the scale and size of our operation, but it does not make sense for the future.
Mr. Korigan and Shri Balani also emphasized that a long -term goal for the health system is to create a supply chain that is originally operated.
“We don’t want (doctor) feel the supply chain,” Mr. Balani said. “It’s there, but they don’t even feel it, this is the future we want to get.”
