Why Women May Want to Work Longer: It’s About More Than Money

The increasing number of old workers is Later selection to retireThere are many possible reasons for this, including Rise of distance workRetirement and the nature of financial stress change the idea that makes retirement ineffective for those who have made very little savings.

Earning a salary for more years of your life has a positive effect on your pocketbook, as you do not need to rely on your savings as soon as possible. You can more and potentially save social security benefits in two ways. First, by delaying your beginning, and second, by increasing your “average wages” (used to calculate your social security benefits), especially if you are earning more on inflation-reforming basis than earlier points in your career.

But what about the effect on your mental and physical health? Traditional retirement years stays at work Improvement Your mind and body, or additional career are damaged by stress and physical exertion that can affect your future health and happiness? The good news for at least women is that recent research suggests that a long -term working life can actually be helpful in slowing both physical. And Mental fall.

In the 60s, women get significant benefits from being on jobs

Thanks to changes in retirement laws in England, researchers have been able to develop a clear picture of long -term working effects.

Increase in retirement age helps women’s memory and health

Prior to 2010, women in England could get their state pension and get at the age of 60. Between 2010 and 2018, however, the retirement age in England gradually increased to 65. As a result, 1 out of 10 women remained in long -term paid work. Researchers felt that this policy change created a real world laboratory to study the effects of work paid on women. He shared his conclusions in the magazine Labor economics,

Researchers found that “women who continue to work over 60 years, on average, they retired at 60 than the low signals of much better feeling and physical disability.”

For example, working women between 60 to 63 years of age performed better on the memory test, recalled 1.5 more words in the delayed recall cognition test. This may not take much, but it is similar to the difference between the richest and poorest women in the test. Long-term women also showed short improvements on immediate recall tests, and an average of six words per minute in oral flow increased-one significant change, as the average flow was 23 words per minute before the policy change.

The women enjoyed better memory regardless of their profession.

These positive effects were seen in workers in all businesses, whether women have kept white-collar or blue-collar jobs. But the most important improvements were observed among single working women.

Physical health was poor in women who continued to work in sedentary jobs.

Women who worked for additional years in physically demanding jobs experienced the promotion of health, increasing their average speed speed from 1 meter per second to 1.2 meters per second. However, the women who worked in additional years in additional years experienced a decline in their health; They slowed physically, with a speed of 0.3 m per second at the beginning of the study.

With mental health and, in some cases, improvement in physical fitness due to delay in retirement, women and policy makers may want to consider health results when determining the age of optimal retirement.

Researchers said, “These results suggest that on average, there are some health benefits of increasing working lives, in addition to such increased earnings, such positive spillover must be included in the policy analysis of changing retirement encouragement,” the researchers said.

Furthermore, although this study focused on women due to the data available as a result of pension reforms, the very few reason to doubt is that the results will not be relevant to both sexes.

Working has such a huge effect on mental and physical health?

Researchers stressed that since these changes have resulted in the rules that delay small amounts of retirement, it is likely that cognition and physical abilities may deteriorate quickly when they leave work.

The reasons for this are simple: quitting work changes both levels of physical and social activity.

Single women experienced the most important cognitive benefits of continuous work as they live alone when they grow up. By working for a long time, they benefit from social interaction at work. Similarly, people physically demand should continue to move their body to work, but if they retire first, no one motivates them to exercise.

For those women who No Want to work for a long time, these results suggest that an active effort to increase exercise and maintain regular social connections will be necessary to combat physical and mental decline. And for those people on the fence, when they have to quit their job, the health benefits of living can combine with financial people so that you can delay in giving notice.
